Louis Dobermann, in Thuringia, Germany, decided to breed the ideal dog - as keeper of the local pound he had access to numerous strays. Dobermann founded his breed around the German Pinscher, introducing the Rottweiler and possibly the Manchester Terrier and the Pointer.
The Doberman has but one owner, but will accept the family circle, taking its responsibilities seriously, is skilled at tracking, and makes a fine police dog. Brave, medium size (27in. for the dog, 25.5in. for the bitch at withers), short coated (thus easily maintained), of noble impressive stamp.
